![]() Compare this to warhammer (or even 3k to a lesser extent), where combat generally consists of some ranged fire then a massive clash that ends in a minute or two with one side routing but with ~70% of the routing unit still alive and near 100% of the winning unit. Ranged is impactful, but most damage is dealt by infantry (unless you have very solid cav ofc) and infantry fights last quite a while leading to casualties on both sides. If you go back and play Med 2 now, you'll find that battles are just more "even" in terms of losses for equally matched armies than any of the modern games. The bigger issue that is likely to stand in the way of a true successor to Med 2 are the recruitment and general combat pacing changes brought about by later historical titles and culminating in warhammer. 3K took some really interesting steps in the grand strategy direction, but it's still nowhere near the depth that we'd have to worry about any of these things to any major degree. What you're describing is a paradox game, not Total War. At most you'll get a 3k style interface and officers with personality but even this seems unlikely. ![]() Domestic politics are irrelevant, this isnt crusader kings. Economic systems dont exist in total war and really never have in any complex degree, again handled by tech and events. "Society" in total war is basically just a building tree and some diplomatic options, the former of which is handled by tech and the latter of which wont change noticeably even over 500 years. You can remove the time entirely and just keep seasons and it maintains the exact same feel time is handled by the tech tree and global events, FOTS demonstrated this pretty well. I think you're vastly overestimating the importance of dates. Please don't downvote me to hell if you disagree with me ok, I'd just like to hear some other opinions. If you think they are, I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts as to how. The first 2 Medieval games were possible because the mechanics at the time were so much simpler, but TW has moved on and I don't think such huge time-spans are possible anymore. Unless perhaps by turning it into some sort of arcade strategy game where the historical aspect is just cosmetic (but I don't think this is what people really want. I could easily imagine a Medieval 3 split into a trilogy of games like WH, but otherwise I can't see any way that this game could be made. How do you even do that, except perhaps by reducing the number of playable factions down to just a handful? And that's on top of giving different factions their own specific mechanics. Sure, you could split it up in like 3-5 different starting "scenarios" with earlier and later dates, like CK does, but even then you have the problem that the game in the year 1000 has to play substantially differently than it would in the year 1400, when the entire civic, political and economic systems of the societies involved had changed dramatically. That means at a minimum making each turn last a year instead of one season (which sucks, as seasons really matter in both campaign and battle). Medieval 3 would have to cover a minimum of 500 years to earn that name, maybe even more. I know this is what so many people want, but by now the historical TW games have become so much more detailed and granular, with even the faction mechanics dictated by the time periods, that they can only realistically cover a span of 100-200 years.
